The Moon Rabbit refers to the traditional Japanese notion that the markings on the surface of the moon resemble a rabbit. The paintings of Sota Sakuma (b. 1977) operate in much the same way. His meticulously rendered worlds stem from an ability to see one thing within another: a landscape coalesces into a skull, a tea vessel shelters its own microcosm, and a bonsai tree morphs into a reflection of human life. Sakuma builds upon his previous fascination with landscape, but this time seeks it out in the world of material objects. These intricately composed works continue to be inhabited by tiny creatures that turn ordinary things into sites of unexpected encounters. The new series of paintings and woodcarvings turns toward still life, interiors, and objects of daily life—not as mere props, but as vessels of memory, stories, and metaphors. All it takes is to look long enough.
