With the series of paintings After Faust, I loosely expand upon a theme I have been exploring recently, while also following up on the FAUST exhibition at the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague. While in the Faust exhibition I presented a narrative through personal individuation to the viewer, in the After Faust cycle I shifted my focus to the motif of the pact with the devil itself.
I perceive the pact as an archetypal representation of human choice, desire, and the internal conflict between good and evil. Its form changes over time and across space, yet its essence remains surprisingly contemporary. Each of us, in some shape or form, confronts our own limits, decisions, and the price we are willing to pay for what we desire.
After Faust is thus a reflection on a pact that may never be spoken or signed. It can exist within a person—as a silent decision, a compromise, or a struggle whose consequences we carry forward.
