Bold Gallery presents the first solo exhibition in the Czech Republic of one of the most interesting Slovak painters today, Dominika Kováčiková (1996).
The winner of last year's prestigious Painting of the Year competition, Kováčiková's work focuses on issues of female identity, not shying away from sensitive themes related to traumatic experiences such as sexual harassment, eating disorders and body shaming. However, she works with subversive symbolism, pin-up colours and an ironic perspective, so that her paintings often result in disturbing confrontations with no clear winner.
The exhibition Soft Targets, specially prepared for Bold Gallery, turns the traditional military meaning of 'soft targets' into a subtle but provocative exploration of the space of vulnerability. With her new paintings, Dominika Kováčiková also opens a dialogue about how society perceives and exploits female vulnerability. It is a challenge not only to reflect on what it means to be a 'soft target' in today's world, but also to consider how to get out of it. The curator is Radek Wohlmuth.
The artist will be travelling all the way from Banská Bystrica for the opening.
As usual, wine refreshments will be provided by the Moravian Wine Bank.
